While statistics show that crime rates continue to decline, not all Canadians feel safe in their homes or communities. New Democrats have voiced there concerns in Parliament and believe that we need a better approach to dealing with young offenders. New Democrats would:

• Support preventive intervention for high-risk youth by investing in community facilities and programs for youth, and through drug dependency programs, literacy programs, treatment for victims of sexual and physical abuse and help for children with behavioral and learning disorders.
  
  
• Support increased funding for community policing, restorative justice and rehabilitation programs for young offenders through initiatives like alternative sentencing and victim reconciliation.
  
  
• Restore Canadians' faith in the justice system through better resources for victims of crime and adequate funding to ensure that the system operates speedily and effectively.
  
  
• Make sentences and bail conditions tougher for chronic repeat violent offenders.
  
  
• Enact new laws and programs to combat domestic violence, spouse abuse, stalking and home invasions.
  
  
• Ensure the RCMP have the funding, personnel, training and equipment they need to combat crime in our communities.
  
  
• Re-institute a dedicated national ports police force to combat organized crime and smuggling in our seaport communities.
  
  
• Address the underlying causes of crime by dealing with poverty, investing in children and families and rebuilding communities.
